KHAP KA PAAP
By Disha Gahlot
Nurtured in a family where daughters are not just cherished and loved but worshipped as well, my heart skips few beats when the electrical activity goes haywire as the ears hear,'breaking news' like 'A couple was shot dead due to inter-caste love affair, Khap saves honour of the family.'
What disturbs me more is the inescapable truth that Khap and I share the same caste and creed, however, due to stroke of luck, I'm far away from their sadistic rules which are in alignment with their immortal 'parampara'. I can't even begin to express even if I step in the shoes of those who have been 'honoured' since shoes may be the only thing they were forced to leave the world with and they better be left to the families of those crying souls but if I were to hear the 'sacred' conversation between Khap panchayat and their 'parampara', I wondered what it would be like. Let's see how it unfolds.
(Dialogue)
Khap: राम राम. Long time no see.
Parampara: Not really. I live in your heart all the time.
Khap: True that. I was just wondering how dear you are to me. I have sacrificed many lives to make sure you live.
Parampara: Hmm. It wasn't really required but nevermind as long as I get to live. Does it bother you that you kill people for me?
Khap: Momentary regrets may have been there but I have to keep the honour of the community and the only way to do is set the right examples.
Parampara: Alright. I'm not sure if you remember when I was born but the circumstances under which I was put in action were entirely different. Society and its viewpoints have changed, I may be the only fortunate constant in your community. May be my time is up too.
Khap: NO!!! It cannot happen. You have to live for eternity otherwise new generations will forget about their 'Lakshman Rekha' and are likely to bring disgrace to the family.
Parampara: May be it's the rekha in your mind that failed to stretch enough to accommodate new generations' way of thinking and living. Just saying.
Khap: (angrily) Khaaaaaamosh!!! You want to live or not!
Parampara: Ofcourse! I do, I do, I do.
Khap: I always knew I had a love affair with you (wink)
Parampara: Who knows there be some obsolete parampara part 2 that has a right to put us behind bars. May be we just got lucky.
Khap: Acha.
Parampara: You have to promise me something today; no matter what happens, you will stand by my side.
Khap: Obviously! Besides, I get to be on television and other social media sometimes because of you. Who would want to give up that fame?!
Parampara: I always believed that you will shine one day.
Khap: Thank you sweetheart. Good night. May you live long.
Parampara: Hopefully. May you live long too (wink) Good night.
And the love story lives, atleast someone is happy! Who cares if innocent lives had to be sacrificed in the most disgraceful way to restore honour and insanity in place and who really knows how many more are in queue unknowingly to be either shot dead or tied behind the tractors dragging them as their skins unite with the roads!
Khap ka paap continues as the sun rises from the east, besides, what's the point in stating facts now!
